Tito: Majority of Disaster-Affected Areas in Sumatra Return to Normal
Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian stated that the majority of disaster-affected areas across three provinces have now returned to normal. Tito, who also chairs the Task Force for Accelerated Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) for Post-Disaster Sumatra, noted positive progress in recovery efforts following the floods.
He confirmed that all displaced persons have moved out of emergency tents, now residing in temporary shelters or utilizing the Temporary Housing Allowance (DTH).
“In West Sumatra, 13 out of 16 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal, representing 80 per cent, with Tanah Datar still close to normal. Agam and Padang Pariaman require continued attention,” Tito said during a coordination meeting in Jakarta on Sunday (24/5).
In North Sumatra, 16 of 19 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal, with South Tapanuli nearing normal. The remaining areas requiring attention are Central Tapanuli and North Tapanuli.
In Aceh, 10 of 18 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal. Gayo Lues is nearing normal, while seven areas requiring attention include Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, North Aceh, Bireuen, Pidie Jaya, Central Aceh, and Bener Meriah.
“The indicators we consider include government operations, healthcare facilities, educational activities, and road access—these must be functional, though not yet permanent. Economic aspects, places of worship, and basic needs such as petrol stations, water utilities, and internet connectivity are also critical,” Tito stated in a written release.
Tito stressed the importance of budgetary support to accelerate disaster-affected area recovery. Central and local government funding, he said, would greatly aid rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, including addressing ongoing needs in the regions.
“For disaster-affected areas, TKD should not be reduced and, if necessary, increased. They will continue to handle significant residual challenges,” Tito said.
