Tito Brings Together Four Governors to Discuss Social Conflict Management Team
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, together with Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian, gathered four governors and regents/mayors to discuss plans to form a social conflict handling team in each region.
The four governors present were West Nusa Tenggara Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa, and North Maluku Governor Sherly Tjoanda.
“There were also regents and mayors attending in the four provinces,” Tito said in Senggigi, West Lombok, on Tuesday (19 May 2026).
Tito said, in line with the instruction of the Menko Polkam as coordinator for politics and security, all Regional Leadership Coordination Forums (Forkopimda) must remain unified in viewing the dynamics developing in each region.
“We also raised several points about the importance of the legal basis. As heads of regions and chairs of Forkopimda, the laws already exist; government regulations are also in place,” Tito asserted.
He emphasised that all regional heads should form social conflict handling teams in each region. This is in line with the mandate of Government Regulation Number 12 of 2022.
“There is a law on handling social conflicts. And I also emphasise the importance of strengthening inter-faith harmony forums in each region,” Tito said.
The former Police Chief explained that early handling needs to be conducted at the lower level to prevent and address potential social conflicts that could be triggered by religious elements.
“Basically, this regional Forkopimda meeting is focused on Maluku, North Maluku, NTT, and NTB to strengthen the handling of social conflicts,” Tito said.
Tito said regional Forkopimda strengthening meetings will also be held in the Sulawesi region. The plan is to hold the event on 29 May and attended by all regional leaders in Sulawesi.
“Thereafter there will also be Papua. So we will move to six regions,” Tito underscored.
