Jakarta (ANTARA) — House of Representatives Commission IV Chairwoman Siti Hediati Hariyadi, commonly known as Titiek Soeharto, praised the Indonesian National Police (Polri) for delivering aid to disaster victims in Central Tapanuli (Tapteng), North Sumatra, on Sunday.

Titiek made the remarks while inspecting the temporary shelter at the Pinangsori Hajj Dormitory in Central Tapanuli, accompanied by National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

“Today I came together with the National Police Chief and the delegation to deliver some aid for the people here. It may not be much, but hopefully it can be of benefit to the community here,” Titiek said in a statement received in Jakarta.

Titiek also expressed gratitude to the government for promptly helping and addressing the problems faced by disaster-affected communities, including the construction of temporary shelters.

“Hopefully this can help ease the burden a little, since their homes were affected by the disaster. Hopefully permanent housing can be built later that is even better for the disaster victims,” she said.

In addition, she thanked military and police personnel who have been helping communities on the ground since the first day of the disaster.

“I saw that from day one they were wading into the mud to help the community, removing timber and mud from homes, and also bringing food and supplies for the residents,” she said.

She also appreciated the police’s deployment of water treatment equipment for disaster victims in need of clean water supplies. She said this step has helped ease the burden on disaster victims.

“Thank you, Pak Kapolri. I saw earlier there is a mobile water treatment unit. So river water, brackish water, and even seawater can be distilled and treated into clean drinking water. These units travel to various areas, easing the burden on communities that need clean water. Hopefully there can be more of these vehicles for other affected areas,” she said.

On the occasion, Titiek also conveyed her deep concern and condolences over the disasters that struck three provinces in Sumatra, particularly in Central Tapanuli.

“Hopefully everyone is given the strength, both physically and spiritually, to face this trial, and that disasters will not come again, and all the problems here can be resolved,” she said.

For information, the temporary shelter at the Pinangsori Hajj Dormitory consists of 56 rooms housing a total of 154 evacuees. The shelter will be equipped with water tanks, bathing and sanitation facilities (MCK), and clean water sources.

In addition, the police also delivered 16 trucks loaded with basic food packages, school supplies, farming equipment, religious supplies, building materials, and hand tractors.
