Titiek Soeharto Endorses Garment Products Made by Nusakambangan Inmates
House Commission IV Chair Siti Hediati Soeharto, known as Titiek Soeharto, has helped promote garment products made by inmates on Nusakambangan island. Titiek also reminded the 175 inmates at the Nusakambangan Garment Vocational Training Centre (BLK) to maintain the quality of their work.
“(Is the premium) for their savings?” Titiek asked Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto at the site on Saturday (20/6/2026).
“Yes,” replied Minister Agus.
“Do they also get additional remission?” Titiek asked again.
Minister Agus confirmed. Titiek toured the sewing area, the pattern-making area, the screen-printing area and the garment packaging area. She then observed the neatness of the stitching and smiled.
Titiek picked up a t-shirt ready for packing and asked the selling price per piece. The price was Rp 50,000.
“Here, I want to promote. I am now inspecting the Nusakambangan BLK that makes garments. The workmanship is neat and good. So for those who want to order, one piece is Rp 50,000, but give a little profit, say Rp 60,000,” Titiek said.
She then flipped the shirt over to examine the front and back. Currently, the Nusakambangan Garment BLK is working on an order for 2,500 t-shirts.
“This is an order from Pekalongan Prison. Perhaps other places, other companies, would like to order here, at the Nusakambangan garment industry,” she continued.
Titiek again expressed admiration and confirmed that the inmates’ stitching at the Nusakambangan Garment BLK was neat. She also appreciated the quality control aspect of the BLK.
“The stitching is neat, isn’t it, Ma’am?” asked Minister Agus.
“Neat. There must be quality control. It seems this is already good, the inside stitching is also neat,” Titiek responded.
She then advised the hundreds of inmates to maintain the quality of their stitching. “Don’t chase high output but end up with untidy work. Don’t chase quantity at the expense of quality,” Titiek concluded.
The Nusakambangan Garment BLK is known to cooperate with PT Sentosa Garmindo Pratama as a vendor partner. The BLK stands on a plot of land covering more than 1,480 square metres, and its construction was funded through corporate social responsibility (CSR) from Bank BRI.
The BLK houses 200 units of machines for sewing, overdeck and overlock stitching. Inmates receive a premium of Rp 1,500 per garment they produce.
The transformation of Nusakambangan is an idea launched by Minister Agus after he was appointed by President Prabowo Subianto. During the transition of the Directorate General of Corrections from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Minister Agus received a report from the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK) regarding many ministry assets classified as idle land.
Consequently, Minister Agus sought to revive the idle land by building vocational training centres so that inmates could engage in self-development activities. The aim is for the skills acquired at the BLKs to serve as a foundation when they are released from prison, preventing them from reoffending.
Training and skills development infrastructure for inmates that has been established on Nusakambangan includes a workshop for concrete blocks and paving blocks made from fly ash bottom ash (FABA) material, a garment BLK, an organic fertiliser processing BLK, eel farming, and waste processing.
Tilapia, catfish and pomfret farming; Vaname shrimp ponds; cattle, sheep and poultry farming; a cigarette rolling BLK; a Mocaf production BLK; and orchid cultivation are also being developed there.
