The Lebaran homecoming season often brings concerns for those leaving their vehicles for extended periods. Many owners simply park and lock their cars or motorcycles without proper preparation, a habit that can lead to problems upon their return.

An automotive expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, emphasized the importance of specific preparations to maintain the vehicle’s optimal condition.

“We need to prepare the car or motorcycle in a safe storage condition, not just park it and lock it,” Yannes said on Wednesday (February 25).

One of the most frequently overlooked risks is battery drain. Even with the engine off, components such as the alarm, Electronic Control Unit (ECU), and keyless system still draw a small amount of electricity. If the battery is already weak before being left, the vehicle may fail to start upon the owner’s return.

In addition to electrical issues, Yannes highlighted the risks to the fuel system. He advised filling the fuel tank to at least three-quarters full before leaving the vehicle. Excessive empty space in the tank can lead to condensation, with water vapor forming and settling into droplets that can contaminate the fuel and cause corrosion in the fuel system.

Another often overlooked aspect is tire deformation. Yannes suggested adjusting tire pressure to the manufacturer’s recommendations and parking the vehicle on a level surface to minimize this risk.

In terms of cleanliness, he reminded owners to ensure the cabin is free of food scraps or other organic matter. This is crucial to prevent rodents from entering the cabin and to prevent mold growth from residual dirt.

“Wash the body and undercarriage of the vehicle, then make sure it is dry to prevent moisture from causing rust,” he added.

Upon returning from the homecoming trip, Yannes advised owners not to immediately start the engine and drive off. An initial inspection should be conducted to check for leaks, tire condition, the engine compartment, and brake function to ensure the vehicle is safe.

“Don’t just start the vehicle and drive off. It is best to do an initial inspection first so that our vehicle remains safe,” he concluded.
