From the use of colourful visors to rear winglets, many are chosen to enhance appearance, making it look more sporty and different from factory standards. However, not all helmet modifications are safe to use on the road. If done excessively or without considering the helmet’s basic function as head protection, modifications could actually increase risk while riding. Ahmad from the Helmet Learning Community says that some accessories are still considered safe to fit as long as they do not interfere with the helmet’s main function, especially from the perspectives of aerodynamics and rider comfort. Nevertheless, Ahmad warns that riders still need to pay attention to the added weight on the helmet. Because excessive accessories can make the helmet heavier and affect comfort and safety when used on long journeys. “Unless the weight of the helmet is increased excessively, that is what endangers the rider,” he said. In addition, the use of dark visors should also be adjusted to road conditions and riding time. A visor that is too dark at night can reduce visibility and make it harder for riders to see their surroundings.
