Tips for Buying Young Second-Hand Cars to Avoid Making the Wrong Choice

Buying a second-hand car that is one to five years old can be an attractive option for many consumers, as it offers more affordable prices compared to new vehicles. In addition to having already undergone initial price depreciation, young second-hand cars generally remain in relatively good condition, feature modern technology, and may still be covered by active manufacturer warranties.

However, prospective buyers must remain vigilant before deciding to purchase a specific unit. “Buying a car aged 1-5 years is actually profitable if the buyer is careful in selecting the unit,” Iwan told Kompas.com recently. According to him, cars of this age are still considered relatively new, yet their resale price is significantly lower than brand-new models. Furthermore, some vehicles still possess warranties, which can lead to lighter maintenance costs.

Nevertheless, Iwan warns that potential buyers must remain prudent. He suggests that consumers ensure the vehicle’s service history is clear and has been performed regularly at authorised workshops or trusted mechanics. “Also, ensure that the odometer has not been manipulated. Sometimes the mileage appears low, but the actual condition of the car does not match,” Iwan noted.

He also cautioned consumers to be wary of finding cars priced significantly below the market rate, as such vehicles may have hidden problems. Iwan recommends that prospective buyers bring an inspection team or an experienced individual to conduct a thorough examination of the vehicle’s condition to ensure a more objective assessment. “If possible, look for units from the first owner, as the car’s history is usually easier to trace,” he added.
