Timor prisoners may get clemency

SEMARANG, Central Java: Four political prisoners from East Timor serving hefty jail terms in the Kedungpane prison here may receive clemency from the government.

The clemency has been proposed by the correctional house in East Timor's capital of Dili from which the convicts were transferred.

"If the clemency proposal is granted, their jail terms will be reduced one month each," Kedungpane prison warden Marsono was quoted as saying by Antara.

He said he had been informed that two of the six East Timorese convicts would not receive clemency because they could not meet the requirements.

The two are Gregorio Da Cunha Saldanha, currently serving a life sentence, and Saturnino Da Costa Belo, who is doing 12 years. They were jailed for their involvement in an anti- government demonstration on Nov. 12, 1991.(pan)
