Timeline of Reckless Driving Incident Involving a Calya Driver on Gunung Sahari, Driving Against Traffic and Colliding with Other Road Users
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Police have arrested a man, HM (24), on Wednesday (25/2/2026). The man was the driver of a black Toyota Calya that was driving recklessly and against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Head of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, said that his officers had arrested the perpetrator after the incident. The police also seized the car, with license plate number D 1640 AHB, as evidence.
“He has been secured, along with another person in the Toyota Calya, and the car has also been taken into custody,” he said on Wednesday evening.
He explained that the incident began when the Toyota Calya was travelling from north to south on Jalan Gunung Sahari. As it approached the Lapangan Banteng bus stop, police attempted to stop the car. Instead of stopping, the car continued driving south on Jalan Gunung Sahari.
According to Reynold, the car then turned left in front of Jalan Gunung Sahari IV and continued to Jalan Bungur Besar Raya. After that, the car turned left again on Jalan Bungur Besar Raya, heading north.
As it reached Jalan Gn Sahari V, the car turned left, driving against traffic towards the east, until it reached the Simpang Empat TL MBAL intersection, and continued on Jalan DR Sutomo towards the east. After passing near the Bintang Baru Hotel, the car turned around, heading west, and returned to the Simpang TL MBAL intersection.
Then, the car turned left onto Jalan Gunung Sahari, heading north towards the Simpang Empat TL Pintu Besi intersection. The car then made another U-turn, driving against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari, heading south, until it stopped near the Golden Truly bus stop, where it was confronted by an angry mob.
He said that the police also pursued the car. The car continued to drive against traffic and collided with other vehicles.
Reynold said that they are still investigating the motive behind the driver’s actions. The driver is currently being questioned by the police.
“The cause is still under investigation,” he said.
