Timeline of Intern Doctor Deaths According to the Ministry of Health
The Ministry of Health (MoH) has affirmed that no indications of excessive workload were found in the case of an intern doctor who died while undergoing the Indonesian Doctor Internship Programme (PIDI) in February and March 2026.
This affirmation was conveyed based on the results of a thorough investigation to ensure aspects of safety, welfare, and working conditions for doctors nationwide.
The Director General of Human Resources for Health, dr. Yuli Farianti, explained that the chronology identification had been conducted together with the Central Indonesian Medical Internship Committee (KIKI), Provincial KIKI, and supervising doctors.
The results show that each case had different medical conditions, namely measles with heart and brain complications, suspected anaemia, and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) with shock complications (Dengue Shock Syndrome).
“Total working hours did not exceed 48 hours per week and rest permissions were given in accordance with the provisions. When referred to a health facility, the condition was already in the advanced stage of the disease progression,” said Yuli on Tuesday (31/3).
The MoH, she continued, emphasises that the implementation of the internship programme has been in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 17 of 2023, with a duration of 12 months and working hours of 40–48 hours per week.
In addition, she said that internship participants also have the right to obtain leave of up to 90 days in one year in accordance with applicable provisions, as part of protection for the health and welfare of participants.
As a response to this incident, the MoH is strengthening various protective measures, including rapid response to handling sick participants, guarantees of comprehensive care, supervision of supervising doctors, to strengthening health screenings and work hour regulations.
The MoH is also increasing transparency of complaint channels and strengthening supervision together with KIKI in all regions.
“We ensure that participant protection is a priority, while maintaining patient safety standards,” emphasised Yuli.
Based on MoH data, the graph of measles cases spiked sharply in the first week of January 2026 with a total of 2,220 cases.
