Timeline of a 10-vehicle collision that killed two on the Cipularang Toll Road
A multi-vehicle crash occurred on the Cipularang Toll Road, KM 93, toward Jakarta, on Thursday 5 March at 20:18 WIB. The pile-up involved ten vehicles and temporarily rendered the lane impassable. Two people were killed and four others were seriously injured.
According to Purwakarta Police Traffic Unit (Laka) officer AKP Ryan Herisandi, the crash began when a Hino Truck Trailer, plate B 9367 UEL, traveling from Bandung toward Jakarta in the first lane, encountered a queue caused by a dump truck’s disturbance. The driver of the Hino reportedly did not anticipate the situation on a straight, downhill section, and subsequently collided with vehicles moving slowly in the queue.
‘As a result of the incident, two people died, two were seriously injured, and six sustained minor injuries, and the vehicles involved were damaged,’ he said on Friday 6 March.
Preliminary findings indicate the Hino truck driver could not control the vehicle which suffered brake failure. However, this remains an initial hypothesis and police are conducting a deeper investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
‘It is suspected that the Hino Truck Trailer No Pol B 9367 UEL experienced brake failure,’ he added.
Starting from the Hino truck, which is believed to have failed to brake, a total of ten vehicles were involved in the pile-up. The breakdown includes one container truck, one pickup, a box truck, and several passenger cars.
