'Time' appoints new editor for Asia

INDONESIA: The world's leading weekly newsmagazine, Time has named its editor-at-large Michael Elliot as Time Asia's new editor, the magazine said in press release made available to The Jakarta Post.

"I'm hugely looking forward to leading the most important magazine in Asia," said Elliott, who will assume his new job in May 2004.

"The extraordinary pace of social and economic change in Asia is one of the greatest stories in the world and Time Asia is uniquely well placed to cover it," he said.

Elliot will replace Karlo Greenfeld, who has named as editor- at large at Time Warner's Sport Illustrated magazine in New York.

Michael, a law graduate, is a Time columnist ("Global Agenda") and frequently writes on war on terrorism and international relations. Since 2003, he has been the editor of the Time Canada edition.

Elliot, an author, award-winning writer and editor, began his career as a teacher and worked as a political editor at The Economist (1984-93). Then he moved to Time's rival Newsweek, where he worked as an editor for five years (1995-2000). For one year (2000-01), he was editor-in-chief of eCountries, a Web-based news and information service.

The Time Asia has 304,000 circulation and its main magazine has worldwide circulation of over 5.6 million. Time is published by Time Inc., the publishing arm of Time Warner.
