TikTok Suddenly Blocked, Users Rush to Download VPN
Internet users in Oman have been flocking to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) following widespread reports that access to the TikTok app has suddenly been restricted.
According to the latest data from Proton, registrations for the company’s free VPN service surged sharply starting 13 August 2026, with the peak increase reaching 600% above the daily average on Friday (14/8). This sudden spike coincided directly with a wave of complaints on Reddit and other social media platforms from Omani citizens who could not access the video-sharing app.
Although the Omani government has not issued an official block announcement, the sudden loss of TikTok access has prompted many people to seek ways to stay connected. To breach the national firewall that is suspected of having been deliberately installed, thousands of people have turned to Proton VPN to circumvent the block by routing internet traffic through servers in other countries.
Although the initial wave of registrations has begun to subside slightly, demand for digital privacy tools remains at a very high level. The latest data shared with TechRadar shows that registration figures are currently holding steady at more than 200% above average.
“Some people report that they can already access TikTok again, but our data shows continued high demand, indicating that disruption at some level is still occurring,” a Proton VPN spokesperson told TechRadar, as quoted on Tuesday (18/8/2026).

Why is TikTok blocked in Oman?
Oman has a track record of restricting access to certain platforms, though it rarely acknowledges such actions as deliberate censorship. When TikTok experienced a nationwide connection disruption in April 2025, Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) claimed it was caused by a technical fault.
As noted in a recent Proton VPN blog post, the government failed to explain to journalists why the “technical reasons” only affected TikTok and did not impact other internet services.
Whatever the reason behind the block, David Peterson, General Manager at Proton VPN, strongly condemned the move.
“Restrictions on TikTok and similar apps constitute a violation of the rights of Omani citizens,” Peterson told TechRadar, explaining that people use the platform for political discussion as well as e-commerce opportunities.
