TikTok Invests Over US$4 Million to Boost AI Education and Tighten Oversight
Social media platform TikTok believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can transform how people express creativity, discover new interests, and feel safe, provided it is used transparently and responsibly. Tom Varghese, TikTok’s Global Public Policy AI Lead, confirmed the company will continue to strengthen the tools, partnerships, and protections that help its community recognise, shape, and understand their experience with AI-generated content. To date, TikTok has allocated more than US$4 million and will continue to invest in this programme to broaden its reach and impact. “We believe everyone needs to understand the context, feel confident, and have control over their experience with AI on TikTok,” Tom said in a statement on Tuesday. He added that the company is continuing to invest in technology, partnerships, and educational materials that help the public identify AI-generated content, understand how it is made, and use these tools creatively and responsibly. Tom announced that TikTok has introduced new ways to help its community recognise and understand their experience with AI-generated content. These include expanding AI literacy efforts with new educational materials and sustained investment in partnerships with trusted experts. The platform is also testing improved detection systems to target accounts that upload AI-generated spam, which can overshadow authentic creator content. Furthermore, TikTok is strengthening its AI transparency technology and partnerships by joining the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) as a steering committee member. As experts have emphasised, education plays a crucial role in helping the public control their experience with AI. To this end, TikTok is working with industry partners such as NAMLE and Henry Ajder to develop new guides that help the community use AI tools responsibly. The company is also launching a new in-app hub where users can learn practical skills to recognise AI-generated content when searching for related terms.
