TikTok Deactivates Accounts of Users Aged 16 and Under
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid has provided the latest update regarding policies on social media accounts for children. The government will implement Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 or PP Tunas and its derivative Ministerial Regulation No. 9 of 2026 starting today, 28 March 2026. Meutya praised the TikTok platform for demonstrating partial cooperative stance. Although not yet fully compliant, TikTok has committed to gradually deactivating accounts of users under 16 years old. “The platform will announce an operational roadmap for users aged 14-15 years,” she stated during a press conference quoted on Saturday (28/3/2026). Meutya said that TikTok has requested an extension or a little additional time to implement the regulation. “So earlier we conveyed that its compliance is partially cooperative, meaning the direction is already heading there, just requesting an extension or a little additional time, and this is indeed what we also ask them to complete their compliance as soon as possible,” she explained. Meanwhile, TikTok has also expressed its commitment to the safety of Indonesian teenagers. “TikTok is committed to complying with this regulation in accordance with the transition period outlined in PP Tunas, including taking compliance steps regarding teenage accounts under 16 years old after the self-assessment process, and through close consultation with the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi),” TikTok wrote in its official statement. In its statement, the platform’s management noted that TikTok users come to learn new things, seek inspiration, and for entertainment. Thus, it assured that TikTok continues to be a safe platform for the community, especially teenagers, which is our top priority. “All content uploaded to TikTok is moderated in accordance with our Community Guidelines,” it stated. It was also mentioned that all content deleted for violating rules, 99.1% of them were proactively removed before being reported. “We also use the most innovative technology to detect accounts that violate the age limit policy, and suspend accounts identified as non-compliant,” it added. In addition, teenage accounts on TikTok have more than 50 automatic security, privacy, and safety settings enabled, allowing teenagers to express their creativity, discover new interests, and learn on TikTok safely. Moving forward, the company will take the necessary steps in line with regulatory expectations, while continuing to strengthen our security systems, and providing information to the Indonesian public as further guidance becomes available. “We will continue to engage constructively with Komdigi in the self-assessment process, and hope that this regulation will be applied fairly and consistently to all social media platforms,” it concluded.
