Tighter USD 25,000 Foreign Currency Purchases to Take Effect in June
Bank Indonesia (BI) will implement a tightening of foreign exchange purchases without underlying documents to USD 25,000 per month starting in early June. Under this policy, any FX purchases above USD 25,000 must be accompanied by the underlying documents.
“I would like to say here that this policy will be implemented in early June this year, meaning next month with a one-month transition period, taking into account the time needed to adjust the system both at Bank Indonesia and in the banking sector,” Deputy Governor Thomas Djiwandono said at a press conference following the BI Board of Governors meeting on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
Previously, BI had tightened FX purchases without underlying documents from USD 100,000 to USD 50,000. According to Thomas, this policy has reduced FX transactions.
The former Deputy Finance Minister said that from April to May 2026 the average daily FX transactions fell to USD 62 million per day from USD 78 million in the first quarter. “That means we expect this trend to continue for the next policy,” he said.
Tightening dollar purchases is one of BI’s efforts to stabilise the rupiah exchange rate. BI has also raised the policy rate or BI Rate to 5.25 percent.
The rupiah against the US dollar moved weaker by 10 points or 0.06 per cent to Rp 17,677 per US dollar on Friday morning, 22 May 2026. The rupiah was at 17,667 per US dollar yesterday.
