Tigers set condition for peace talks
SRI LANKA: Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels said on Monday they
were ready to resume peace talks with the government based on
their proposal for power-sharing, a move that could open the door
to further discussions.
The offer came in a meeting between rebel representatives and
envoys from Norway who are trying to end one of Asia's longest
civil wars by getting stalled peace talks back on track.
After the meeting, peace envoy Erik Solheim said he was
optimistic about the discussions but added it would take time to
resume direct negotiations, a Norwegian embassy source said.
Solheim was expected to brief the government on the rebels'
position later on Monday or on Tuesday. -- Reuters
