Tigaraksa to get a grand mosque

JAKARTA (JP): A grand mosque with a capacity of 4,000 is to be built on a 26,757-square-meter plot of land in Tigaraksa, Tangerang at a cost of more than Rp 5.89 billion (US$589,000), an official said yesterday.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the two- story mosque, which will have floor space of 5,526 square meters, was conducted Friday by Tangerang Regency Saifullah AR after the Idul Fitri prayer, the regency's spokesperson, Ena Karlina, said.

The construction of the mosque, which will be the biggest in Tangerang, will be conducted in stages in line with available funds, Ena said.

"The first stage will be built at a cost of Rp 2.58 billion."

Moh. Thamrin, head of the project committee, explained that the mosque would be equipped with underground rooms and a 65- meter minaret, garden and a 2.7-hectare parking lot.

The mosque is located about one kilometer from the Tangerang regency building, Antara reported. (hhr)
