Through This Programme, Pegadaian Promotes Green Tourism in Yogyakarta
PT Pegadaian (Persero), in partnership with the Government Investment Centre (PIP), has distributed 50 electric-assist pedicabs (Bekalista) valued at IDR 1.4 billion to bolster the people’s economy and environmental conservation in Yogyakarta. The initiative earned the state-owned pawnbroker recognition from the Minister of Finance for its strategic collaboration in driving the micro-enterprise sector within the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The handover, symbolised by a miniature electric pedicab, was presented directly by Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa to PT Pegadaian’s Director of Human Capital, Tribuana Tunggadewi, at the Sasana Hinggil Kraton Yogyakarta. The assistance coincides with the Yogyakarta Provincial Government’s intensified programme to establish low-emission zones and pedestrian areas along Malioboro Street and Margo Mulya Street, a mandate stemming from the area’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A key aspect of this programme is the restriction and eventual ban on fuel-powered motorised pedicabs, making the shift to traditional pedal-powered and electric-assist pedicabs essential.
“This collaboration reflects Pegadaian’s genuine concern for the environmental and economic pillars. By providing these Bekalista units, we aim not only to preserve Yogyakarta’s cultural heritage and environment but also to ensure that micro-enterprise operators in the traditional transport sector have a decent livelihood and are more energy-efficient,” stated Tribuana Tunggadewi. The Bekalista design adheres to the traditional vehicle standards stipulated in the Yogyakarta Special Region Regulation No. 5 of 2016. The programme is designed to deliver a broad, layered positive impact, aligning with ESG principles and supporting Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and decent work and economic growth. PT Pegadaian hopes the success of this programme in Yogyakarta will serve as a model for other cultural tourism cities across Indonesia to adopt inclusive green transport ecosystems.
