Through Diplomacy in Tokyo, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Strengthens Indonesia's Position to Achieve Energy Self-Sufficiency
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, strengthened Indonesia’s position in realising energy self-sufficiency through a series of international diplomatic efforts during his working visit to Tokyo, Japan. According to him, the government continues to bolster Indonesia’s ESDM sector within the global energy landscape to enhance national energy resilience and achieve energy self-sufficiency. “Amid the current global energy supply uncertainties, we need to strengthen collaborations that lift each other up, rather than pulling each other down,” Bahlil stated in his remarks in Jakarta on Wednesday. Bahlil was in Japan to attend the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum (IPEM) in Tokyo on Sunday (15/3/2026). In addition to attending the official IPEM forum, Bahlil utilised his working visit to hold several bilateral meetings with officials from friendly nations to engage in diplomacy and promote concrete and mutually beneficial cooperation. The energy diplomacy conducted by Bahlil resulted in several strategic agreements. With the host country, Japan, Indonesia signed cooperation in the fields of critical minerals and nuclear energy, targeted at strengthening future energy supply chains while supporting the development of future energy technologies in the Asia-Pacific region. One of the main outcomes of the meeting was the signing of a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) in two strategic fields, namely critical minerals and nuclear energy. This cooperation is expected to strengthen a more integrated, resilient, and sustainable energy system.
