Through BSI Explore 2026, Students Collect Book Donations to Boost Literacy
Access to quality reading materials remains a challenge in several rural areas of Indonesia, including for primary school-aged children.
Students from Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI) taking part in the BSI Explore 2026 programme have responded to this challenge by organising an Open Book Donation programme in Desa Karang Indah, Bojongmangu District, Bekasi Regency.
This community service initiative aims to provide reading facilities for pupils at SDN Karang Indah 1. As part of the drive, the students collected donations from the general public, families, and communities.
The types of books gathered varied, ranging from textbooks, children’s stories, encyclopaedias, and general knowledge books to motivational novels, with the campaign promoted through social media.
The head of the BSI Explore group for Desa Karang Indah, Bekasi, Kohar Hanapi, explained that the donation drive was designed to build shared awareness of the importance of education.
“We believe one book can open many dreams. That is why we created this programme as a platform for anyone who wants to share knowledge through books,” Kohar said in a statement quoted on Wednesday (12/8/2026).
The programme was also supported by field supervisor RR Roosita Cindrakasih. She praised the students’ sensitivity in designing a work programme based on an analysis of needs in the field.
“The students are not only learning to plan a work programme, but also learning to understand the needs of the community and find relevant solutions,” Roosita said.
The collected books will be sorted, cleaned, and neatly packaged before being handed over to the school. The team, consisting of Kohar, Aulia, Derina, Fazryan, Laura, and Nurulita, hopes the new collection will stimulate pupils’ interest in reading and creativity.
The activity in Desa Karang Indah is part of BSI Explore 2026, which runs from 5 to 25 August 2026 in 38 partner villages. Through this programme, students are expected to continue making a tangible contribution to supporting more equitable education quality in the regions.
