Three workers died in a culvert in the Bambu Apus area of Cipayung, East Jakarta, in a suspected workplace accident. The victims’ bodies have been evacuated.

Head of the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service Operations Section, Abdul Wahid, said the victims were found dead inside the culvert. “The victims fell into the culvert,” Wahid said on Thursday (9/7).

The evacuation process was carried out by firefighters after receiving a request for victim evacuation at 09:49 WIB this morning. A total of 12 rescue personnel were deployed to the scene.

Officers began the evacuation at 10:00 WIB using various equipment. Wahid explained that the three victims died one after another while attempting to assist each other. Initially, one worker entered the culvert and lost consciousness halfway down.

Seeing the incident, a colleague attempted to rescue him but also lost consciousness. A third worker then entered to help and similarly collapsed. “The project worker was entering the culvert, then fainted halfway down the ladder. His friend tried to help but also fainted. Then another person entered and also died. The total number of victims is three,” he explained.

The evacuation of the three victims from the culvert was completed at 11:55 WIB. Authorities are still investigating the incident, but it is suspected the workers died from a lack of oxygen or exposure to hazardous gas.
