Three Workers Die After Entering Culvert in Cipayung, East Jakarta
A workplace accident occurred in a culvert in the Bambu Apus area of Cipayung, East Jakarta. Three workers died and have been evacuated. Abdul Wahid, Head of Operations for the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service, stated that the victims were found dead inside the culvert. “The victims fell into the culvert,” Wahid said on Thursday (9/7/2026). Firefighters received a request for victim evacuation at 9.49 a.m. Western Indonesian Time this morning. A total of 12 rescue personnel were deployed to the scene in Bambu Apus, Cipayung. The evacuation process began at 10.00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. Officers evacuated the victims using a range of equipment. The three victims attempted to help one another in succession. Initially, one worker lost consciousness after entering the culvert. “A project worker was entering the culvert, then fainted halfway down the ladder. His friend went in to help but also fainted. Then another person entered and fainted as well. The total number of victims is three dead,” he explained. The evacuation of the three victims from the culvert was completed at 11.55 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. The authorities are still investigating the incident. “The victims were successfully removed from the culvert and the officers are safe,” he said. The primary cause of the deaths is not yet known. It is suspected they suffered from a lack of oxygen or were poisoned by hazardous gas.
