Three Soldiers Fall, Indonesia Requests UN to Evaluate Peacekeeping Force Security
Indonesia is pushing the United Nations (UN) to carry out a thorough evaluation of the security systems for peacekeeping forces. This request comes after three Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldiers were killed during a mission in Lebanon.
Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the government wants to ensure the safety of personnel serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission. “We are once again striving to ensure that our peacekeeping forces are healthy and safe in carrying out the tasks entrusted to them,” Sugiono said at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday (4/4/2026).
The government has also conveyed condolences for the deaths of Major Inf. Anumerta Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Serka Anumerta Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and Kopda Anumerta Farizal Rhomadon. Additionally, three other soldiers were reported injured and are still receiving treatment.
Sugiono said the government has requested the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting in response to the incident. This request has been approved by France, which is responsible for Lebanon issues in the Security Council.
“The extraordinary Security Council meeting will primarily condemn the attack on the peacekeepers and UNIFIL. We also demand a comprehensive investigation because this is a peacekeeping mission,” Sugiono stated.
He emphasised that attacks on peacekeeping forces cannot be justified as they are tasked with maintaining stability, not engaging in conflict. “They are peacekeeping, not peacemaking. They are not equipped with the capability to make peace,” Sugiono said.
The government views this incident as a momentum to strengthen protection for peacekeeping forces in various conflict areas. Diplomatic efforts will continue to ensure such events do not recur.
