Three NATO countries explore joint defence procurement
Moscow (ANTARA) - The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland are currently exploring the formation of a new mechanism for joint defence procurement in 2027, according to the UK Treasury.
“A core group of NATO allies - Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, along with other partners - today announced that they are exploring the establishment of a 2027 mechanism for financing with the aim of pooling demand and promoting joint procurement,” the Treasury stated on Tuesday (17/3).
The mechanism is intended to accelerate defence investments while increasing the availability of weapons, particularly ammunition.
“Working together with partners and existing international institutions, and complementing NATO and EU initiatives, this mechanism should seek to strengthen collective deterrence, expand defence industry capacity, and enhance defence capabilities through joint procurement,” the statement read.
On the same day, the Financial Times newspaper, citing various sources, reported that the mechanism would allow accession by other countries, both NATO members and other allies.
Membership is reportedly contingent on unanimous decisions from the core group of participating countries.
It was mentioned that the programme’s objective is to reduce defence procurement costs and achieve economies of scale by combining orders for tanks, ammunition, and missiles.
