Three men killed by police, mob

JAKARTA (JP): Three alleged criminals were killed, two of them by police bullets, at three separate locations on Tuesday.

Jakarta Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Harry Montolalu identified two of the men as suspected drug dealer Muhakir alias Bansir, 27, and robbery suspect Hery alias Bencong, 24. According to the police, both were shot while resisting arrest.

The other victim, who has still not been identified, was mobbed to death after residents of Pisangan subdistrict, Ciputat in South Jakarta found electronic goods hidden in his wooden cart.

Harry said Bansir was shot at around 5 p.m. after a raid on a house on Jl. Matraman Dalam I in Pegangsaan Menteng, Central Jakarta, where police discovered 50 grams of marijuana.

"When the officers fired warning shots, Bansir tried to escape. He kept running and we shot him in the back," Harry told reporters.

Separately, East Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hidayat Fabanyo said robbery suspect Bencong was gunned down at the Pasar Induk traditional market in Kramatjati.

"Early on Tuesday morning, Bencong and his two accomplices robbed a fruit stall of Rp 3.5 million (US$364). When police got hold of Bencong, he tried to run. He was shot in the back of the head," Hidayat said. (ylt)
