Three killed in weekend accidents

JAKARTA (JP): Three people were killed in traffic accidents over the weekend, according to city police records.

One man, identified by Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital as Bobby Anthony, 49, was killed in an accident on Jl. Yos Sudarso on Sunday afternoon.

Two others were killed in an accident on the Pondok Pinang tollway in South Jakarta at 5 p.m. on Saturday, hospital morgue staff member Oyon said.

The victims, Endang Esti Purbowani and Ronggo Sunggono, were thrown from the Feroza van they were traveling in after a tire blowout caused the vehicle to hit a fence, Oyon said.

City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said on Sunday that the back tire of the van burst on the tollway and the driver lost control of the wheel.

Anton identified the driver as Adj. Sr. Comr. Subiyanto of the National Police detectives. His wife, Endang, was seated next to the officer.

In the backseat were Subiyanto's nephews Ronggo, Slamet and Sigit Priyanto.

The rear left tire of the van burst when the van was right above the Jl. Fatmawati intersection, Anton said.

"The van bounced off the tollway fencing and passengers Endang and Ronggo, who were sitting on the left side of the van, were catapulted out of the car, and landed on a minivan," he said.

Endang died instantly and Ronggo died later at Fatmawati Hospital in South Jakarta. (ylt)
