Three jailed for poaching

PANDEGLANG, West Java: The district court sentenced three men Thursday to a total of two years in jail for poaching sea slugs (tripang) in the Ujungkulon National Park.

The council of judges sentenced Jemi bin Jarsa to 10 months, Tedi Bin Roma to seven months and Mamad bin Barmawi to seven months imprisonment respectively.

The judges said in their verdict that the Sumatran migrants had endangered the sea slug population in the park and disturbed the ecological balance in the well known reserve.

Earlier, prosecutor Th. Agus Waluyo had demanded that the defendants be incarcerated for a total of 26 months, Antara reported.

The men were caught poaching at sea on May 18, 1990. The authorities seized their fishing boat and equipment. (pan)
