Three Indonesian digital innovations recognised at WSIS Prizes 2026
Three Indonesian digital innovations have earned recognition at The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2026, organised by the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria assessed that the achievement demonstrates Indonesia’s digital transformation is increasingly capable of delivering real solutions for societal needs. “I see that the nominees and winners at this year’s WSIS have grown stronger in weight over the last three years,” Nezar stated in Jakarta on Thursday.
In the WSIS Prizes 2026 event, Indonesia successfully placed three of its best initiatives among the 90 WSIS Champions 2026 from around the world. These three innovations relate to expanding educational access, enhancing cybersecurity, and helping the public combat hoaxes.
Nezar considers the various innovations developed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to have real benefits for the community and to be capable of driving digital transformation in the public sector. According to him, this success can serve as an example for other ministries, agencies, and regional governments to deliver public services that are closer, easily accessible, and responsive via digital platforms.
“The initiatives are very good, very useful, and also impactful for driving digital transformation in public services,” he said.
Nezar affirmed that the development of generative artificial intelligence technology makes hoaxes increasingly difficult to distinguish from authentic information. “Hoaxes are becoming more sophisticated, especially with generative AI. Hoaxes can be made that are very similar to something authentic,” he revealed.
Therefore, he assesses that the presence of an information verification platform like Jalahoaks is an important instrument to strengthen public resilience against false information. The programme is deemed capable of involving white hat hackers to identify system vulnerabilities while encouraging the positive and productive use of digital skills.
“We can get input about the vulnerabilities of the systems we build while educating the younger generation to use their abilities for positive things,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rumah Pendidikan platform proves the government’s effort to build an integrated digital ecosystem in the education sector to expand access to educational services for communities across Indonesia. “We can prove that digital transformation, the adoption of advanced technology, has been carried out in various sectors in Indonesia,” he emphasised.
He hopes the winners or their representatives can attend the WSIS Prizes 2026 award ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, in the first week of July 2026. In the WSIS Prizes 2026 event, 1,596 digital innovations from 122 countries participated. A total of 2.2 million people cast votes to select the best digital innovations from all participants. These voting results were reviewed by WSIS experts, resulting in the selection of 90 champions, with three champions originating from Indonesia.
