Three die in Jakarta fire

JAKARTA: A woman, Tamini, 65, and her two grandchildren, Dea, four, and Retno, eight months, died in a fire on Jl. Utan Panjang in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

The head of the Utan Panjang subdistrict, Aris Husaini, said the fire razed 120 houses in the subdistrict, leaving 300 people homeless.

The fire began at 8:45 a.m. and was extinguished at 9:30 a.m., affecting three neighborhood units in the subdistrict. The fire is thought to have started when a kerosene stove exploded.

Twenty-one fire trucks were deployed to the scene to battle the blaze.

The bodies of the three victims were taken to Cipto Mangunkusuma Hospital on Jl. Diponegoro in Central Jakarta. --JP
