Three die in floods

SEMARANG, Central Java: Heavy rains over the past two days have caused floods in several parts of the province, killing three people, injuring two others and damaging dozens of houses, Antara reported yesterday.

The three who died were all women who had slipped and fallen into the raging Wuluh River in Blora regency.

In the Kebumen regency, the embankment of the Kethek river burst and water inundated at least 50 houses and thousands of hectares of fields in the districts of Adimulya, Puring and Petanahan. Residents, however, refused to seek shelter in other regions.

Residents said they needed some 10,000 sandbags to stop up the hole in the Wuluh River embankment. (swe/har)
