Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry/Environmental Management Agency (KLH/BPLH) Rasio Ridho Sani stated that the PROPER Environmental Award represents a form of democracy.

This programme for assessing company performance ratings in environmental management serves as an instrument to encourage industry compliance with environmental regulations, even surpassing mere compliance, or beyond compliance.

Furthermore, he added, PROPER is also an instrument of KLH/BPLH that employs a public disclosure approach (public information transparency).

“We assess company performance, then we convey the results of this assessment to the public,” he said at the PROPER Environmental Award 2025 event, held at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

“So, PROPER also constitutes a form of democracy in environmental protection and management. Because we share the results with the public regarding the performance achieved by you, the company leaders,” Ridho Sani added.

This step, he said, is necessary to provide space for company innovations in efforts to protect and manage the environment.

“Today, PROPER has reached three decades, 30 years. This is a programme consistently implemented by the government. So today, we are announcing PROPER or promoting PROPER in its third decade. Not many government programmes can be consistently sustained,” he stated.

On the other hand, he explained that the number of PROPER participating companies in 2025 has increased from the previous year, from 4,495 to 5,476 companies from 299 industrial sectors.

“We also convey to everyone that the Minister places very serious attention and urges us to continue increasing the number of PROPER participants,” he said.

“Currently, our data records approximately 72,000 companies that require supervision. Meanwhile, those that can be covered through PROPER number only 5,476,” he revealed.

To that end, in order to increase the number of companies joining PROPER, a system based on artificial intelligence (AI) will be developed.

This system is expected to have sufficient capacity as the number of PROPER participants continues to grow.
