The government has disclosed that three countries have submitted requests for urea fertiliser imports from Indonesia amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This development underscores Indonesia’s robust position as a strategic global producer.

However, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has not yet disclosed the identities of these countries, as the negotiation process is still underway, with the aim of achieving agreements that provide added value and optimal benefits for Indonesia.

“We will export urea because we are a urea producer; several countries have already requested it. There are three countries requesting,” said Minister Amran when met on the sidelines of inspecting the Bulog Panaikang Warehouse, accompanied by Bulog Deputy Director Marga Taufiq, in Makassar on Sunday, 5 April 2026.

“Yes, later; this is still under negotiation, so that our price can be a bit better,” he added.

Furthermore, Amran stated that the government has secured fertiliser supplies since the beginning of the year through the purchase of raw materials, ensuring that national fertiliser availability remains stable to date.

According to the Minister, this strategic step is part of the visionary policy of President Prabowo Subianto, who has a strong instinct in safeguarding the resilience of the agricultural sector, including ensuring the availability of production inputs amid global dynamics.

He also emphasised that political tensions in the Middle East region do not significantly impact food prices in Indonesia, as the current national rice availability is in a safe and sufficient condition to meet public needs. The stock reaches 4.5 million tonnes, secure for the next 11 months.

Previously, PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) President Director Rahmad Pribadi stated that urea fertiliser exports will continue as long as domestic needs are met, with the primary priority being to maintain the availability and stability of supplies for the national agricultural sector. “The important thing is Indonesia is secure first, then export,” said Rahmad when met after a working meeting with Commission XI of the DPR RI in Jakarta on Thursday (2/4).

In the current situation, Indonesia is still capable of exporting urea fertiliser to help meet the needs of neighbouring countries facing supply shortages amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to global turmoil in the Middle East.

Rahmad mentioned that the destination countries for Indonesian urea fertiliser exports have included Australia, India, and the Philippines. He also noted that the national urea fertiliser production capacity reaches 8.8 million tonnes operationally, although the installed capacity is 9.4 million tonnes.
