Three Commodities Poised to Bolster Indonesian Exports in 2026
Indonesia has potential commodities that can be exported to boost the trade balance. These commodities come from the agriculture and plantation sectors.
PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk Chief Economist Andry Asmoro revealed that commodities from the agriculture and plantation sectors have high demand from various countries, for example coffee, cocoa, and nutmeg.
“Many of the countries that are currently our export destinations have large populations and significant economic growth potential. This is what can later boost our exports going forward,” he said on CNBC Indonesia’s Squawk Box on Thursday (13/8/2026).
According to Asmoro, Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of these three commodities. He also mentioned coconut as one of the commodities needed in various countries.
“Moreover, if we talk about how much of our exports also go to India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where India’s growth is relatively good and its population is also high. This is what will actually drive the potential to grow even higher,” Asmoro explained.
He acknowledged that over the past three years, average growth in the plantation, agriculture, and fisheries sectors has been below 3%. However, he said, it is not impossible for the government to improve the performance of these sectors.
“If we talk about the sector, Indonesia will be able to grow sustainably above 5.5%, even above 6%. That is according to our calculations,” he said.
Asmoro also stressed that when these sectors are prioritised, Indonesia can pursue economic growth, create jobs, and become one of the drivers of foreign exchange supply domestically.
“So if you ask, for example, what does the government need to do? Focusing on just those two sectors will answer three things,” he said.
