Three BNI suspects confront Edi

JAKARTA: A key suspect in the Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) scandal, Edi Santoso, was confronted with three other suspects on Monday as police continued their investigation into the case.

Edi, the former head of foreign customers at the BNI Kebayoran Baru branch, was confronted with the co-owner of the Gramarindo Group, Adrian Waworuntu, the former operational manager of the BNI Kebayoran Baru branch, Nirwan Ali, and an unidentified suspect.

Edi sparked controversy early last month when he released a letter claiming that he, along with other suspects in the scandal, including Maria Pulien Lumowa and Adrian Waworuntu, met with Gen. (ret) Wiranto twice to discuss Wiranto's plan to run for president next year. Wiranto has denied meeting Edi.

Police hoped the confrontation would clear up the confusion resulting from the letter.

"I haven't received a report from my men about the results of the confrontation but we will soon inform you of any progress in the case," said the National Police's director of economic crimes, Brig. Gen. Samuel Ismoko. --JP
