Blora, VIVA – A fire from a resident’s kitchen in Bakah village, Kunduran district, Blora Regency, turned into tragedy. Three residents were nearly killed and had to be hospitalised after being engulfed by flames following a leak from a 3-kilogram LPG cylinder.

Kunduran Police Chief Iptu Budi Santoso confirmed the incident. According to medical assessments, burns suffered by SY and SJ were serious, requiring intensive care.

‘The incident occurred where a person was burned due to LPG gas leakage. Victim SY sustained burns of around 54 percent, victim SJ 64 percent, and victim S, who attempted to help, 10 percent. The victims are currently receiving medical treatment,’ he said on Thursday, 5 March 2026.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 4 March 2026, around 16:00 local time at the home of SY (35). He had just bought a 3-kilogram gas canister and planned to install it for cooking. However, he said he had difficulty installing the regulator.

SY then asked for help from his acquaintance, SJ (39), a local farmer, to help install the regulator in the kitchen. Disaster struck. When SJ attempted to install the regulator, the cylinder is believed to have leaked.

Meanwhile, embers from the traditional fireplace or pawon used for cooking previously were still burning. The gas that escaped rapidly then touched the flame. The blaze quickly grew and scorched the bodies of SY and SJ.

Another resident, S (45), who was at the scene and tried to provide assistance, was also engulfed in flames. He sustained burns to several parts of his body. Police, together with the Criminal Investigation Unit and local military personnel, went to the scene after receiving the report from village officials.

Officers then conducted an on-site investigation and seized several pieces of evidence for further inquiry. Police are still probing the exact cause of the gas cylinder leakage.
