Three arrested for robbery, rape in Bekasi

JAKARTA (JP): Local police detectives have arrested three of
the five suspects believed to have robbed a Bekasi poultry
breeding farm manager in the small village of Cimuning, Bantar
Gebang, in Bekasi, over 30 kilometer east of here.

"All of them were shot in the legs while trying to run away
from officers," head of the Bekasi police precinct, Lt. Col.
Elfrizo Tobing, said here yesterday.

According to City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna, the
three were identified as Salim, 46, Marsani, alias Bagong, 34,
and Pandi, 36.

"The other two, whose identities are known to us, are still
being hunted by a special team," Iman said. They were identified
only as Ich and Nem.

The five-member gang was being hunted for its alleged role in
the pre-dawn robbery at the house of the farm manager, Yanto
Subianto, 40, at Cimuning village on Tuesday.

The robbers, some of whom were wearing masks, broke into the
house after overwhelming the security guard.

They threatened to kill Yanto if he resisted or shouted for
help. He was then tied up and locked inside a bathroom.

The men ransacked Yanto's private office before stealing 280
grams of jewelry and Rp 1 million in cash.

News reports said earlier that one of the robbers, later
identified as Ich, also raped Yanto's wife, Yani, 26, in front of
their child.

Police forensic scientists found traces of sperm on the bed
but a reliable police source said that it belonged to Yanto, who
had had sex with his wife just before the robbery took place.

"Based on preliminary investigations, we believe that it was
only sexual assault by Ich," Iman said, adding that one of those
arrested said that Ich ejaculated prematurely and so was unable
to copulate.

"However we have to wait for the other two fugitives to be
caught and the final analysis made by the forensic experts."

Salim and Bagong were apprehended by local detectives, who
were on a routine patrol near the border area of Bekasi and East
Jakarta in the early hours of Thursday, officer Tobing said.

"When the detectives, driving in a car, tried to get closer to
a passing Kijang minibus, the driver of the minibus accelerated,"
Tobing said.

After the detectives' car blocked the Kijang, the four
passengers got out of the car and ran away quickly. It was at
this point that they were shot in the legs. Police later found
them hiding nearby.

After a brief investigation, police found evidence that the
four had just robbed a home of a housewife in the nearby small
village of Kampung Pekopen, in Desa Lambang Jaya in Tambun.

According to the victim, Mrs. Rindit, 45, the four robbers
broke into her house, tied her up, and took her Kijang minibus,
100 grams of golden jewelry, Rp 3 million in cash and household
goods, including a television set and radio.

During police questioning, it emerged that two of the
suspects, Salim and Bagong, were members of the wanted Cimuning's
robbery gang.

The other two were identified as Ujang, 31, and Lili, 25.

Based on their newly-acquires information, police then
arrested Pandi, another suspect in the Cimuning's case at his
hiding place in Bekasi.

"He was also the first one who broke into the house by putting
the ladder at the window," the spokesman said.

Both Tobing and Iman said that police are still investigating
for the alleged roles of the gang in other robberies.(bsr)
