Three Advantages for Cak Imin if He Runs in the 2029 Presidential Election, According to PPI Boss

The National Awakening Party (PKB) intends to nominate its Chairman, Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin), as President or Vice President of Indonesia in the 2029 presidential election. There are at least three advantages for Cak Imin if he runs in the 2029 presidential election.

This view was expressed by the Executive Director of Parameter Politik Indonesia (PPI), Adi Prayitno. Adi assesses that Cak Imin is more suitable to run as a presidential candidate rather than a vice-presidential one.

“Even statistically, Cak Imin’s electability is far from Prabowo’s, there are at least three advantages for Cak Imin and PKB if he runs in the presidential election. First, the coattail effect in the legislative election, which was proven in 2024 when PKB’s votes increased. Second, an incentive for Cak Imin to run in the 2034 election. Third, enhancing the political prestige of PKB and Cak Imin,” Adi told reporters on Sunday (12/4/2026).

According to Adi, PKB is on the right track with its target of nominating Cak Imin as a presidential candidate in 2029. This is especially true since the presidential threshold has been abolished in accordance with the Constitutional Court ruling.

“Moreover, PKB’s voter base is from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic mass organisation in Indonesia,” Adi said.

Adi stated that Cak Imin would find it easier to become a presidential candidate than a vice-presidential one. Adi added that PKB has a boarding pass to nominate Cak Imin and there is no internal competition.

“If the target is vice-presidential, PKB would be treading water because in 2024 it was vice-presidential. Especially if the target is vice-presidential for Prabowo, there are many competitors. It’s complicated,” he explained.

PKB, Adi clarified, need not fear defeat if it nominates Cak Imin to run in the 2029 presidential election. “Even if they lose, they will surely be invited into a coalition by the winner. The proof is now, even though they lost the 2024 presidential election, but he (holds the position of) coordinating minister,” he continued.

Previously, PKB revealed its targets for the 2029 election. One of PKB’s targets is to make Cak Imin President or Vice President of Indonesia.

“Only in that way can we as a party not only survive, but in the future also continue to grow larger, continue to achieve the major goals that are our big targets, including making Gus Muhaimin President or Vice President in 2029,” said PKB Deputy General Chairman Hanif Dhakiri at the PKB Cadre Appreciation and Halalbihalal event at the PKB DPP office in Central Jakarta on Friday (10/4/2026).

Cak Imin responded to PKB’s target. He stated that President Prabowo Subianto remains the strongest presidential candidate.

“In 2029, Pak Prabowo will still run and is still very strong,” said Cak Imin.

“Pak Prabowo, if he runs, will definitely win, and we support the winner,” he added.
