Threatening Student Safety, Fragile Wall After Fire in West Jakarta Still Not Demolished

The Cendrawasih School of the Pancaran Kasih Foundation in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, is urging the government to promptly demolish the remnants of a workshop building wall that burnt down adjacent to their premises. The wall on Jalan Cendrawasih Raya is now cracked, fragile, tilted, and at risk of collapsing onto the school grounds, thereby threatening the safety of hundreds of students. “We already conveyed yesterday that the relevant authorities with the authority should demolish it immediately, so that the building does not collapse and fall on us. That’s why we’re waiting for the right time for it to be dismantled,” said Michael, a kindergarten teacher at Cendrawasih Pancaran Kasih Foundation, when met by Kompas.com at the location on Thursday (9/4/2026). The fragile remnants of the fire-damaged wall appear to be just waiting to collapse and hit the roof of the single-storey school building below it. The steel roof frame of the workshop is also visibly bent and shattered. Previously, during the fire that engulfed the workshop, the second and third floors of the building collapsed downwards. Moreover, the Pancaran Kasih Foundation complex and the Sidang Jemaat Allah Church (GSJA) are bustling daily with children’s activities and congregation members. “Of course we’re worried; this is a school with many children, and there are often worship services in the church as well. It’s dangerous if it suddenly collapses because it’s already precarious,” Michael explained. Michael also mentioned that the church and school areas seemed to receive a miracle as they were not directly affected by the severe fire. As a precautionary measure, the school has cleared the area directly under the tilting wall. A total of four classrooms at the back have been sterilised from student activities, including one kindergarten B classroom whose ceiling was breached by falling concrete material during the fire. “We’re not using them for now to prevent any unwanted incidents. We have to be cautious for the children’s sake,” he stated.
