Threatened with UCL Qualification Failure, Slot Doesn't Want Liverpool to Suffer Another Loss Next Week
Liverpool is under pressure after losing to Aston Villa in the 37th week of the 2025-2026 English League.
In the Aston Villa vs. Liverpool match at Villa Park on Saturday (16/5/2026) early WIB, The Villans defeated The Reds with a score of 4-2.
This result keeps Liverpool in fifth place in the English League standings with 59 points.
However, the competition for a spot in the Champions League (UCL) next season is still tight until the last week.
This season, the English League has five teams that will compete in the league phase of the Champions League.
However, Liverpool’s position is not yet fully secure as they could still be overtaken by teams below them.
Bournemouth is currently only four points behind and still has two games remaining.
This situation makes Liverpool’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League uncertain.
According to him, the team needs additional points to secure a position in the top five of the standings.
“It’s detrimental [the loss to Aston Villa] because we needed a win, or maybe even two draws would have been enough,” said Slot, quoted from the club’s official website.
The Dutch coach said that Liverpool now only has one option in the last week of the English League, which is to win.
“But now we know one thing for sure, that we need a win next week if we want to do it [qualify for the Champions League].”
Slot also realized that the competition is not over because other teams still have the opportunity to achieve maximum results in the remaining matches this season.
“As we all know, other teams also need to win. So this loss is very detrimental,” he said.
The match is expected to be tight because Brentford also has an important target at the end of the season.
The visiting team is trying to break into the top seven to be able to compete in European competitions next season.
Therefore, Liverpool is certain to have to perform at their best if they want to maintain their chances of playing in the Champions League next season.
