Threat of Dismissal for Bekasi City Transport Officials Over Extortion Allegations

Several officials from the Bekasi City Transport Department (Dishub) in West Java are allegedly involved in illegal levies (pungli) against a truck driver, amounting to Rp 1.7 million. The officials are now facing the threat of dismissal.

The allegations surfaced after a video circulated widely on social media. In the footage, a person recording approaches several Bekasi Transport officials inside a room, accompanied by a truck driver who is alleged to be the victim. The recorder asks the driver to identify the official who allegedly demanded and took the money, and the driver subsequently points to one of the officials present.

The video also shows cash, believed to be the proceeds from the illegal levy, being returned to the driver.

The Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, has spoken out regarding the alleged extortion, expressing his disappointment with the conduct of the Bekasi Transport officials. He has coordinated with the Bekasi City Government to follow up on the matter.

“I am very disappointed with the behaviour of certain Bekasi Transport officials who engaged in extortion against drivers. Last night, I coordinated with the Mayor of Bekasi because they are employees of the Bekasi City Government,” Mulyadi stated via his Instagram account on Saturday (1/8/2026).

Regarding the potential dismissal of the officials, Mulyadi informed the Mayor of Bekasi that the individuals should be sacked. While he could not yet confirm whether the officials are Civil Servants (ASN) or Contract Workers (PPPK), he has called for decisive action.

“I have requested the Mayor of Bekasi to take firm action by dismissing them from their jobs dishonourably,” he added. He expressed hope that such incidents would not recur, emphasising that officials in positions of authority should serve and protect the public rather than making life difficult or extorting them.
