Thousands risk losing right to vote
BANDUNG: With just two days to go before the deadline for voter registration passes, tens of thousands of voters in Bandung regency remain unregistered, an official said on Monday.
West Java Elections Commission (KPUD) chairman Setia Permana said eligible voters living in at least 15 villages in Bandung regency could lose their right to vote if the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) failed to register them before the Dec. 31 deadline.
Permana warned of demonstrations protesting the loss of people's right to vote.
"I don't know why BPS officials have failed to register eligible voters. It is bothersome because we don't have a complete list of voters," Permana said on the sidelines of the signing of an agreement between parties contesting the elections at the provincial police headquarters.
Permana estimated there were 25 million eligible voters in the province who were expected to cast their vote at 83,630 polling booths to be set up in 6,700 villages across the province. - JP
