Thousands queue 2 km in Melaka heat for semiconductor jobs
More than 1,000 Malaysians braved the scorching sun in Melaka to apply for jobs at a semiconductor factory, forming a queue that stretched for 2 km. Many arrived as early as 5 am to attend an open interview session held by German company Infineon Technologies at the Holiday Inn hotel in Melaka on 14 June. The firm is seeking 500 new employees for production operator and technician roles, offering a starting salary of RM3,500 (approximately Rp15.24 million) per month.
Photos and videos posted on social media showed a winding but orderly line extending from the hotel onto a busy main road. According to Chinese-language newspaper Sin Chew Daily, the overwhelming turnout prompted the company to distribute QR codes at 10 am for applicants to upload their resumes, advising them to go home and await further updates. Many, however, chose to remain and wait despite the hot and humid conditions.
The long queue drew the attention of Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh and Mayor Shadan Othman, who distributed food and drinks to those waiting. Shadan said he met with Infineon’s management to seek clarity on the situation and urged the company to ensure the safety and comfort of job seekers. Meanwhile, Melaka executive councillor Ngwe Hee Sem said the long queue was not a sign of high unemployment in the state, noting that Melaka’s jobless rate stands at 2%, among the lowest in Malaysia. He attributed the large turnout to the attractive salary offered by the company.
