Thousands of West Sumatra inmates enjoy Eid al-Adha sacrificial meat
West Sumatra Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections has confirmed that 6,356 inmates in the region will enjoy sacrificial meat during Eid al-Adha 1447 AH.
West Sumatra Corrections Chief Kunrat Kasmiri stated that the sacrificial meat will be cooked before distribution to inmates in prisons and detention facilities.
“The sacrificial meat will be cooked and then served to inmates as prepared meals,” Kasmiri said after witnessing the slaughter at Padang Class IIB State Prison on Wednesday.
He noted that as of Wednesday, 27 May, there were 6,356 inmates comprising prisoners and detainees across all correctional facilities in West Sumatra.
“Prison and detention facility heads will decide how the meat is prepared, whether as dendeng, rendang, or other dishes,” he added.
Kasmiri explained that in previous years, the sacrificial meat was typically processed into rendang as an additional meal for inmates.
He stated that the sacrificial meat dishes do not replace regular meals but serve as supplementary offerings during Eid al-Adha.
“Inmates continue to receive their regular meals, with rendang or dendeng made from sacrificial meat as an extra,” he said.
West Sumatra Corrections will slaughter 69 animals for Eid al-Adha, comprising 19 cattle and 50 goats.
The animals were donated by various parties, including Padang Mayor, members of the DPR Commission XIII, corrections staff, prison cooperatives, Bukittinggi’s Baznas, Sijunjung Agriculture Office, foundations, prison partners, and private entities.
“Each prison and detention facility must calculate the required meat quantity based on their inmate population,” he said.
He added that any surplus meat can be distributed to staff, inmates’ families, and local communities surrounding the facilities.
