Thousands of Port Workers Face Dismisal
TEMPO Interactive, Surabaya:The chairman of the Land Transportation Organization of Tanjung Perak, Surabaya, Kodi Lomahayu, said around 6.000 workers at the local port area are facing the threat of dismissal. "If the condition of export-import transportation services in Tanjung Perak remains slow for the next six months, dismissals cannot be avoided," he said yesterday.
The impact of the global crisis, Kodi said, has caused export goods, like textile, food and beverages, going through the Tanjung Perak Port to drop drastically.
As such, Kodi said, the delivery and transportation service at the port has also declined. "Only half of the 600 armada that we currently have is operational," he said, adding that the armada is operating by rotation.
So far, the businessmen are still bearing the cost of meals for those working at Tanjung Perak, even though many of them are not actively doing business.
