Thousands of Jakarta Residents Join Free Mudik Programme with Provincial Government, Departing from Monas
Jakarta’s Governor Pramono Anung and Vice Governor Rano Karno, accompanied by officials from the Jakarta Provincial Government, officially flagged off tens of thousands of participants in the 2026 Free Mudik Lebaran (Eid homecoming) programme at the Monas area in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.
Thousands of Jakarta residents holding Jakarta identification cards participated enthusiastically in the programme to return to their hometowns. Pramono noted that participant numbers had increased by 34 per cent compared to the previous year.
The Governor expressed hope that the entire journey would proceed safely and smoothly without significant obstacles until residents reached their respective destinations. The Jakarta Provincial Government deployed 744 buses, all certified as roadworthy, for the initiative.
These buses departed simultaneously towards 20 cities and regencies across six provinces: Lampung, South Sumatra, Central Java, West Java, East Java, and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The free mudik programme also included persons with disabilities, with Baznas DKI designating blind individuals, individuals with physical disabilities without wheelchairs, and deaf persons as eligible participants, targeting various locations on Java Island.
The mass mudik operation this year resulted from collaboration between government funds and support from various private sector entities and regional state-owned enterprises (BUMDs). Several companies contributed through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to increase departure quotas for residents.
