Thousands of Iranian Citizens Take to Streets, Mourn Death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Thousands of Iranian citizens poured into streets across several cities on Sunday, 1 March, to express condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in a joint strike by the United States and Israel.
Large crowds were seen filling the streets of the capital Tehran. They carried Iranian flags and photographs of Khamenei whilst chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans.
National mourning by Iranian citizens occurred following an announcement by Iran’s state media that Khamenei was killed in the joint assault by the United States and Israel on Saturday, 28 February.
The strike was also reported to have killed several members of Khamenei’s family, including his daughter, grandchild, and son-in-law. Additionally, Iran’s Defence Minister Amir Hatami and Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Mohammed Pakpour were reported to have been killed in the strike.
