Thousands of Inmates in Bali Receive Sentence Reductions During Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr
Thousands of inmates in Bali have received remissions, or sentence reductions, during Nyepi Saka 1948 and Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. This policy refers to Law No. 22 of 2022 on Correctional Services and Presidential Decree No. 174 of 1999 on Remissions.
“Both for Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr, the principle is the same, namely granting rights to inmates who have met the requirements in accordance with legal provisions,” said the Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Correctional Services (Kanwil Ditjenpas) Bali, Decky Nurmansyah, on Friday (20/3/2026).
A total of 1,090 inmates were proposed to receive remissions and sentence reductions during Nyepi on 19 March 2026. The remissions have been realised through decisions to 1,089 inmates. The breakdown includes 1,081 inmates receiving special remission (RK) I, 2 receiving RK II, and 6 juvenile inmates receiving special sentence reductions.
The 1,090 inmates proposed for Nyepi remissions consist of six foreign nationals (WNA) and 1,084 Indonesian nationals (WNI). Remissions for all WNA have been realised, while one remission for a WNI remains unrealised.
For Eid al-Fitr remissions, the number of proposed recipients totals 1,671 inmates. The proposals have been realised for 1,639 inmates. The breakdown includes 1,613 inmates receiving RK I and 26 receiving RK II.
The 1,671 proposed Eid al-Fitr remissions consist of 15 WNA and 1,653 WNI. All proposed WNA have received the remissions. For WNI, 1,627 have received them.
Decky revealed that the granting of these remissions was carried out across all technical implementing units (UPT) of the Bali Kanwil Ditjenpas. The UPTs include correctional institutions (lapas), state detention centres (rutan), and special juvenile training institutions (LPKA).
“These remissions are not only a form of sentence reduction but also a motivation for inmates to continue improving themselves and enhancing legal awareness and nationalism,” said Decky.
