Thousands of Buddhists attend Waisak ceremony at Borobudur
Magelang - Thousands of Buddhists from across Indonesia and abroad observed the Tri Suci Waisak 2570 BE (2026) ceremony at Borobudur Temple in Magelang Regency, Central Java.
Bhiksu Dwi Virya of the Mahayana Sangha of Holy Land Indonesia stated that the Waisak observance honours three pivotal events in Gautama Buddha’s life: his birth as Prince Siddhartha, his attainment of enlightenment, and his passing into Parinibbana.
This year’s peak ceremony took place precisely at 15:44:44 WIB, with monks, religious leaders, and devotees gathered solemnly at the temple.
He added that the theme for Waisak 2570 BE is ‘Dharma as the Source of Morality and Wisdom’, encouraging followers to adopt Dharma as a guide for cultivating noble character, wisdom, tolerance, and responsibility in society.
According to him, Buddha’s Dharma teachings remain relevant for addressing modern challenges and building harmony among humanity.
Through the Tri Suci Waisak commemoration, Buddhists are urged to internalise Dharma and universal compassion to bring peace, wisdom, and harmony to all beings and the world.
He noted that Borobudur’s Waisak celebration is one of Indonesia’s largest Buddhist religious events, attracting international participants annually.
