Thousands of bottles of alcohol destroyed
JAYAPURA, Papua: Jayapura Police destroyed on Wednesday thousands of bottles of alcoholic drinks at Jayapura Port.
The bottles were seized from various shops here in Jayapura from July 25 to August 25 this year, during an anti-alcohol operation named Drunk Matoa 2003.
Deputy chief of Jayapura Police Comr. Mathius Fachiri said that the destruction was timely.
He said that 80 percent of criminal offenses and traffic accidents that occurred in Jayapura were linked to the consumption of alcohol.
Twenty-three Jayapura residents were killed and 14 others were badly injured in traffic accidents this year after consuming alcoholic drinks. The consumption of alcohol was also linked to 244 criminal offenses and 15 rape cases this year in Jayapura. JP
